Eternity and Peace

With the understanding that “immortality is a delusion,”1 the following quotation puts this topic into perspective: “We need to be ready,

whether for physical death or the rapture, and we need to live every day and make every decision like, today we are going to see Jesus.”2 A work by Eric Metaxas about Dietrich Bonhoeffer amplifies the foregoing thought:

We are daily dying with Jesus Christ. Those who live with Christ die daily to their own will … Our physical death becomes not the end but rather the fulfillment of our life with Jesus Christ. Here we enter into community with the One who, at his own death, was able to say, “It is finished.”3

When eternity is settled, fear loses its grip on your life.

Practical Preparation

EXAMINE YOURSELF

No matter where you are on this journey called life, there are two
indisputable facts: First, your life will eventually come to an end on earth.
Second, your life is the Lord’s; He created you, and He knows the plans
He has for you. Do you want to be right with God before drawing your
last breath? You have a choice. You can go to heaven or hell. Have you
decided, or do you still need to do so? Regardless of your age, you may
need to make a choice, be encouraged that you made the right choice, or
consider the choices at hand. The Reality of Death: Are You Ready? will
help you on your journey.

Peace at the end of life begins with preparation in thepresent.

Hope in Grief

Many books and articles have been written about grief in the past 20 years.  Despite that, two of the three books remain benchmarks in the literature on grief today were written more than 50 years ago.

Kessler, David. Finding Meaning: The Sixth Stage of Grief. Scribner, 2020.

Kessler builds on his work with Elizabeth Kubler-Ross in On Grief and Grieving: Finding Meaning through the Five Stages of Loss.  Calling from his life as a child, witnessing a mass shooting at the same time his mother was dying, to losing his 21-year-old son suddenly, Kessler brings unique personal insights. These experiences, coupled with those of teaching individuals from the fields of medicine, law enforcement, and counseling about trauma, death, and grief, led him to identify a sixth stage of loss, meaning.

Kubler-Ross, Elisabeth. On Death and Dying. 1st ed. Routledge, 1969.

This work remains a comprehensive work on death and dying.  It identifies the five stages of death that a person passes through: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. In turn, there are many benefits accrued by those who are left to grieve for a loved one.

Kubler-Ross, Elisabeth, and David Kessler. On Grief and Grieving: Finding Meaning through the Five Stages of Loss. Scribner, 1970.

Building on her seminal work, On Death and Dying, Kübler-Ross and Kessler apply the five stages of death to the grieving process.  They explore the areas of sadness, dreams, isolation, healing, and others.

Biblical Readiness

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:

 A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;

 A time to cast away stones,
And a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace,
And a time to refrain from embracing;
A time to gain,
And a time to lose;
A time to keep,
And a time to throw away;
A time to tear,
And a time to sew;
A time to keep silence,
And a time to speak;
A time to love,
And a time to hate;
A time of war,
And a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8,
(New King James Version)
